A Quote
“Go to where suffering is aligned with your capacity to meet it. You don’t have to go to death row or live in a monastery. You don’t have to sit with the unsheltered if that’s not your work. Go to where you can care safely and deeply and broaden that capacity over time.” — Roshi Joan Halifx
Actions to support Medicaid
You may already be contacting your representatives about protecting Medicaid if you are using the 5 Calls App, but here are a few other resources for supporting Medicaid during the ongoing budget reconciliation.
The Working Families Party is hosting virtual phone banking on Monday, May 12, 2-4pm EDT. For those of us with representatives that are committed to protecting Medicaid, this is an impactful way to mobilize the constituents of vulnerable Republican members of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
Additionally, if you have time,
has a long list of additional steps you can take in their recent post, as well as highlighting the impact work requirements would have if implemented.Actions to support the environment
We have 10 days to comment on a proposed rule change by the Fish and Wildlife Service that cuts protections for endangered species. Comment officially here. Read more from the Center for Biological Diversity here.
Furthermore, three resolutions passed the House seeking to undermine the Clean Air Act. H.Res 87, 88, and 89. You can read more about it here. Call your senators if you oppose these resolutions.
Phone Banking Wednesdays and Thursdays with Sister District
The Sister District Project has launched ongoing Wednesday and Thursday virtual phone banks at various times. They are working to mobilize voters to elect Dem candidates to the VA House of Delegates. Sign up here.
An opportunity for Idaho Subscribers. (And Iowa and Minnesota readers).
A special shout out to Idaho for being my home state, and the second most subscribed state to this Newsletter.
has highlighted ID S1036 that would prohibit mRNA Vaccines, effectively banning most COVID-19 vaccines in Idaho. Call your state legislators to oppose this. has details on similar bills for readers in Iowa and Minnesota.Mutual Aid for Mother's Day with #FreeBlackMamas
NationalBailOut.org has a Mother’s Day campaign to help bail out as many Black mamas and caregivers as possible. Read more about how the bail system punishes people for being poor. And support the #FreeBlackMamas campaign here.
Resistbot Emails to Representatives
Resistbot is a tool to quickly send emails to your representatives. Click the link to learn how to set up your account.
You can also use it to quickly write and send emails to your representatives, but unless you can write it in under 5 minutes, or you plan to share your code for others to use, you are better off calling.
Emails are much less effective than calling (I have seen some estimate that a call is worth 10 emails), but with Resistbot templates it is so fast it is worth doing in addition to calling.
I often will be able to send these emails while I make calls using The 5 Calls App.
